As the US Embassy moves south of the river to Wandsworth next year, the empty modern Grade II listed shell in Grosvenor Square is getting a £1 billion makeover. It is being converted into a luxury Mayfair hotel with a large meeting room by architect Sir David Chipperfield.  Sir David has been taken on by the overseas developers Qatari Diar and together they intend to restore the high security site to a greener open space; more in keeping with the smart London Square. Housed in the former London HQ of Midland Bank, meeting rooms at The Ned are part of an ambitious hotel project. Converting this once derelict Lutyens-designed building is being masterminded by hospitality experts Soho House, in a joint venture with the Sydell Group. It is Soho House’s most ambitious conversion yet. The Ned, which takes its name from the architect‘s nick name, Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens, is on a much larger scale than their other properties. For large events, especially at late night, a taxi marshal is a valuable asset to an event team. A few years ago after attending a star studded film premiere I was stranded with not a single cab in sight. It was bucketing down with rain, the venue was on a red route and Uber hadn’t been invented.  The end result was that the excitement of the night was washed away. All I remember is getting soaked.
