As the US Embassy moves south of the river to Wandsworth next year, the empty modern Grade II listed shell in Grosvenor Square is getting a £1 billion makeover. It is being converted into a luxury Mayfair hotel with a large meeting room by architect Sir David Chipperfield.  Sir David has been taken on by the overseas developers Qatari Diar and together they intend to restore the high security site to a greener open space; more in keeping with the smart London Square. Converting this once derelict Lutyens-designed building is being masterminded by hospitality experts Soho House, in a joint venture with the Sydell Group. It is Soho House’s most ambitious conversion yet. The Ned, which takes its name from the architect‘s nick name, Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens, is on a much larger scale than their other properties.
