London – The world’s top travel destination
London has topped the 2015 MasterCard Global Destinations Cities Index, beating 131 other cities on the list. This is no ‘one off’; London was also world beater last year and has been the number one destination for five out of the last seven years.
The Index reflects people’s movements around the globe and the prominence of London as a destination and area of growth. The UK Capital dominates as an international business hub. 2014 saw more international visits than ever before, with meetings and events increasing London’s business trips to a record level.
It is predicted there will be a 6% rise this year to 18.82 million overnight visitors, who will spend some £13.3billion whilst they are here. Just short of 1m visitors to London will come from New York, followed by Amsterdam, Dublin, Frankfurt and Stockholm.
As for the rest of the world, Bangkok comes in second with Paris in third place. New York is nudged out of the top five by Istanbul, which saw the biggest increase, up 11.4% from 2014. Europe on the whole is holding its own with nine of the top 20 destinations.
