Private hire of the London Eye for dinner

Us London conference organisers have seen quite a few skyline entertainment spaces come and go for private corporate parties. Recent additions to make a conference more memorable include the Shard, the Mondrian on the south bank and the Sky Garden in the city. Even the new Inter-Continental at the O2 is getting in on the act. The views are panoramic but the London Eye goes one step further by offering a moving backdrop.
“Dining at 135” gets its name from the height of the 135 foot high London Eye. It gives small private parties view of London with exclusive access to the iconic landmark, which I have since learnt is the tallest cantilevered observation wheel on the planet. To get exclusivity on the wheel you have to wait till all the day trippers have cleared, so you don’t actually board until 8.30pm. However a champagne reception on terra firma (namely at the nearby Marriott County Hall) enables you to get the party started earlier.
In all you get three “round trips” on the Eye. This means you enjoy a starter, main and dessert course per rotation. With restricted catering access waiters serve food from silver heated boxes. If this sounds like airline food, forget it, menus include a choice of lobster, lamb and halibut, complimented by white linen table cloths, flowers and an array of glasses for the specially selected posh wines.
Practicalities such as discrete loo stop are covered at the end of a rotation, and on the third and final part of the evening a guide joins the capsule to point out the London nearby landmarks such as Big Ben and further afield to Primrose Hill and Wembley.
